DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks) rewards participants who contribute real-world hardware — wireless hotspots, GPU compute nodes, storage drives, environmental sensors — to a decentralized network. Unlike most crypto reward categories, DePIN income is recurring: you set up hardware once and earn tokens continuously as long as your node is active and meeting coverage or compute demand. The upside is a token-denominated passive income stream; the downside is hardware investment, setup complexity, and token price volatility. CRR evaluates DePIN opportunities by annualized token yield per dollar of hardware invested (at current token prices), network saturation in the target coverage area, and the protocol's track record for consistent payouts and non-dilutive tokenomics. We explicitly flag networks where the emission schedule is highly inflationary and where hardware ROI assumes token price appreciation. Common risks: hardware becomes worthless if the network loses adoption or tokens collapse; geographic saturation means early movers in dense areas may have already captured most rewards; technical complexity of setup and maintenance is often underestimated; and some DePIN projects have centralized reward algorithms that can adjust payouts arbitrarily. Sub-types: wireless hotspot networks (Helium-style, low hardware cost), GPU compute marketplaces (high hardware cost, highest upside), storage networks (medium cost, steady demand from AI workloads), mobility/IoT sensor networks (low cost, highly experimental), and AI inference nodes (emerging category, GPU-intensive). GPU compute is the highest-risk, highest-reward sub-type; hotspot networks have the lowest barrier to entry.
